Braskem Idesa is a company committed to social responsibility, as well as to health, safety, and the environment. The Company believes that interaction and good relationship with the communities in its environment are fundamental; for that reason, it developed a set of interaction initiatives with the communities based on a Management System designed under the best international practices. One of these initiatives to strengthen the relationship with the community is the Public Participation Program, which has two essential actions: Open Houses and Community Meetings.
Open Houses seek to provide up-to-date information on the progress of the project, as well as listen to and resolve the doubts of different community representatives. During the events, visitors have the opportunity to receive official project information via ten modules, where experts from Braskem Idesa explain the actions implemented, in addition to listening to comments and contributions, always reinforcing the commitment to maintain a transparent relationship with the local population.
From 2011 to 2015, eight Open Houses events have been held and, in total, more than 1,915 people have participated in the initiative.
In addition, Braskem Idesa has prioritized employment opportunities for communities close to the project, with 90% of the workforce coming from the Democracia y Libertad, Pollo de Oro, Nahualapa and Lázaro Cardenas communities.
Environmental responsibility and preservation of the local culture
Prior to the construction of the Braskem Idesa project, studies were carried out on archaeology, cultural heritage, air quality, and noise, as well as the state of soil and groundwater, in order to fully understand the region where the Petrochemical complex was established. All results were reported to community members. In addition, environmental monitoring has been carried out in the participatory mode; this means that representatives of the communities have received technical guidance to accompany the samplings and to be able to participate in the analysis of the results.
As part of the environmental preservation measures, the entire flora originally existing on the site was identified, and the species considered vulnerable according to the regulations of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), were rescued and transplanted to an environmental reserve with monthly monitoring of their survival to ensure adequate adaptation to the new habitat.
In addition, Braskem Idesa allocated an area of 30 hectares within the complex as an environmental preservation area and acquired an area of 100 hectares for the development of a conservation and environmental education project.
